BONUS: Buzzfeed’s “27 Problems Only People Who’ve Done the Otley Run Will Understand”
It’s a daunting, alarming and menacing event.
It requires an immense amount of strength, stamina and tolerance. Many attempt this magnificent challenge, many don’t make it. Ladies and Gentleman, I’m here to introduce the Legendary Otley Run.
Formerly known as the “Headingley Mile”, this world famous and arguably England’s most famous pub crawl now stretches over a mile here in Leeds. Daring partakers will face 18 pubs and here’s the kicker — must do it in fancy dress. Now for my American readers, “fancy dress” is just a costume, something you’d wear on Halloween.
Here large groups can be seen all down Otley Road in ridiculous coordinating outfits, stumbling from the Skyrack, tripping out of Trio, and hurling outside the Headingley Taps. Superheroes, army men, smurfs, zombies and even the rare sighting of a large group of inflatable penises can be spotted EVERY SINGLE NIGHT throughout town.
Attracting bachelor parties, weekend tourists and being in a city with almost 120,000 college students, needless to say — the Otley Run is a popular attraction.
Blocking traffic, blowing chunks and blacking out, the cherished Leeds tradition has had plenty of critics. Some bars refuse to let Otley runners in, while many citizens petition to the city to crack down on this rambunctious ritual. Though for the time being, the Otley Runners are loud. They’re proud. And they’re in for a wicked hangover tomorrow.
